Coastal and fisheries co-management research

Coastal and fisheries co-management research
In South Africa, new policies and legislation have been introduced to manage coastal and fisheries resources and alternate approaches to governance are being sought. At policy level, attempts have been made to move away from a top-down authoritarian models of management to those that foster participation co-operation and joint responsibility for national resource management.  However, the challenge is to put policy into practice.

This research is aimed at enhancing our understanding of the bio-physical and socio-economic conditions, contributing factors, institutional arrangements and strategies for successful implementation of coastal and fisheries co-management in order to contribute to academic debates, influence policy and contribute to practical implementation.

  • Clarification of the policy, legal and institutional framework supportive of co-management arrangements for coastal and fisheries resources in South Africa;
  • Identification of key conditions that inhibit or facilitate co-management arrangements in South Africa;
  • Assessment and analysis of fisheries compliance and the impact of co-management on levels of compliance;
  • Development and application of research methodologies and experimental techniques that facilitate a co-management system and include the participation of resource users and authorities;
  • Development of a monitoring and evaluation framework to effectively assess and analyse the impacts and outcomes of co-management arrangements;
