Northern Cape IDP Toolkit
Strengthening Environmental Sustainability in the Integrated Development Planning Process
Having developed a toolkit for the Western Cape Province in 2004-2005 and undertaken training of IDP officials, the EEU were appointed to develop a similar toolkit for the Northern Cape province. This project is a joint collaboration between the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT); the Northern Cape Department of Tourism, Environment and Conservation (DTEC); the Northern Cape Department of Housing and Local Government (DHLG) and the Environmental Evaluation Unit, University of Cape Town (EEU).
The Western Cape Toolkit was used as a starting point and adapted to develop the Northern Cape Toolkit, comprising a handbook, case study brochures and a resource CD. The EEU worked in close collaboration with DTEC and the municipalities to identify key challenges faced by the Northern Cape municipalities. For each phase of the IDP, practical tools are suggested to assist planners in making the IDP process and projects more environmentally sustainable. Examples of projects from the province are used throughout the Handbook and together with the ten case studies provide a useful working manual for IDP officers.
