Page Western Cape Internship Programme
The pilot Western Cape Internship Programme is funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and managed by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. In mid 2004, the EEU was approached by DEAT to drawn up Terms of Reference for a pilot one year internship for new graduates. The EEU did so, and in February, 2005, 15 new South African graduates in the fields of Environmental Management, Sustainable Development and Nature Conservation were appointed.

Public participation in environmental decision-making in South Africa was spearheaded through the Consultative National Environmental Policy Process (CONNEPP) in 1995. Aimed at securing stakeholder input to the development of a new environmental policy, this process resulted in the adoption of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) in 1998.

The EEU has been engaged in research to investigate the environmental dimensions of land reform for many years, commencing with work in the 1990s about land-use options that would yield outcomes of environmental, social and economic sustainability; research in 1995 to set in place a system to monitor the environmental impacts arising from land reform; and an investigation in 1999/2000 about land reform and protected areas.
