Macassar Dunes Co-management
Macassar Dunes Co-management
The Macassar Dunes Co-management project is a partnership project with the Macassar Dunes Co-management Association, the City of Cape Town and Cape Nature that aims to create socio-economic benefits to the surrounding communities through the development of educational, tourism and conservation projects. The project is located on the Cape Town coast adjacent to Macassar and Khayelitsha and is bounded by the Eerste River in the east, Baden Powell drive in the north-west and False Bay to the south.
Through the development and implementation of a range of environmental projects, the partners intend to enhance the conservation value of the area, raise environmental awareness, develop skills through training and capacity building programmes and create local employment. A further objective is to facilitate and support the establishment of a representative organisation that would ultimately play a major role in long-term planning, management and decision-making with respect to the Macassar dunes.
Projects that have been identified include the development of an eco-trail and a basic educational facility; the implementation of an ongoing alien vegetation clearing and rehabilitation programme; awareness raising, training and capacity building for stakeholder groups; as well as the appointment and training of community monitors to provide a safe and secure environment.
