Human Rights and Business South Africa Project

Human Rights and Business South Africa Project
This entails contributions to a broader project on business and human rights in South Africa, which is being coordinated by the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship and the Dutch NGO, Aim for Human Rights. One of the main objectives of the broader project is to adapt the Human Rights Compliance Assessment (HRCA) Quick Check – a tool developed by the Danish Institute for Human Rights – to the South African context. This involves case studies of particular companies operating in South Africa, numerous workshops, and a national conference organised in conjunction with the South African Human Rights Commission in March 2008.

The EEU’s contributions to this project include the following:
  • A case study of applying the original HRCA Quick Check within SAB Miller;
  • A case study of applying the adapted, South African version of the HRCA Quick Check within Woolworths;
  • A survey of the top 50 listed South African companies in terms of their public information, measured against key indicators derived from the South African version of the HRCA Quick Check;
  • The preparation of an academic article and popular press articles consolidating various action research activities undertaken as part of the broader project.
