• Analysis of the need for a regional approach to environmental impact assessment in Southern Africa The EEU is part of a research project, funded by the IUCN (World Conservation Union) looking at the need for a more regional approach to EIA in South Africa. Three large projects have been reviewed by members of the project team to determine the extent to which cumulative and transboundary effects are being identified and addressed. The EEU was responsible for reviewing the Lubombo Spatial Development Initiative. The other projects reviewed were the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme and the Sugarcane Irrigation Scheme of Mnjoli Dam in Swaziland. The findings of the reviews were presented and discussed at a conference in Maputo at the end of May 2002.

• Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA) The EEU was part of a team participating in identifying an assessing water related problems in Southern Africa. The EEU is providing socio-economic input into the assessment.

• Environmental Management Systems, South Africa. The EEU is assisting two clients to set up ISO14001 compliant environmental management systems.

• Administrative Environmental Review Guideline Manual for the Provinces of South Africa. The EEU has produced a manual which provides guidance to the provinces on how to process applications made in terms of the regulations under the Environmental Conservation Act. The manual has been designed to be as generic as possible and will enable the provinces to process EIA and related applications more effectively.

• Public Participation Programme for the Chapman’s Peak Drive Integrated Environmental Management Process, Cape Town, South Africa. The EEU managed and facilitated the public facilitation process for the reopening of Chapman’s Peak Drive, which had been closed for over two years due to rock falls. The aim of the process was to identify the key environmental issues that needed to be addressed during the construction and operational phase of the project. .
